The quest for postgraduate degrees in Nigeria is on the increase. Average Nigerian graduates desire to acquire it immediately after passing out from National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Generally, It is meant for graduates who desire to advance their knowledge and skills in their particular field of study. Courses/disciplines are basically broken down into sub-specializations for mastery. Students in these programmes aimed at becoming professionals/masters in their chosen fields.
In Nigeria, there are numerous universities, both public and private, that offer postgraduate programmes. There are however, very few that have stood tall in terms of duration of study, staff strength and quality infrastructure.
Acquisition of postgraduate degrees by Nigerians have become a trend largely due to the lack of availability of jobs. These degrees are mainly obtained to increase as well as balancing the chances of being gainfully employed; because having a superior first class or second class nowadays, does not guarantee a good job. Perhaps, this has contributed to why it is not lacking in terms of infrastructure, as there is plausibility of private sector support. Due to its cosmopolitan nature, the school is blessed with qualified staff from diverse part of the country.
One important feature of running a postgraduate programmes in University of Lagos is the general acceptability of its certificates. This is as a result of its pedigree and long years of maintaining quality academic standard. Also, the school calendar is fast and relatively stable for students to complete their programmes within record time.
Ahmadu Bello University
Founded in 1962, Ahmadu Bello University, named after the first Premier of Northern Nigeria, is located in Zaria, Kaduna State. It prides itself as the premier university in Northern Nigeria. This citadel of learning has produced lots of prominent Nigerians, especially from the North. It is regarded as one of the best and an elitist school in the North.
The academic institution is one of the few highly funded institutions in Nigeria, hence its state-of-the-art facilities. The school boast of having highly qualified staff and stable and unbreakable academic calendar which makes postgraduate programmes in the school attracting.
Founded in 2002, Covenant University is a private Pentecostal christian university in affiliation with Living Faith Church Worldwide. As one of the popular and leading universities in Nigeria, it has changed the dynamics of how schools at all levels are run in Nigeria and maintaining a high academic standard as obtainable in developed countries, this explains why its fees are exorbitant compare to others. However, the students get the best as the school boasts of having state-of-the-art facilities as well as qualified staff.
Due to its consistent and unbreakable academic calendar, postgraduate programmes becomes quite inviting as students will complete their programmes within record time. The school has won University of the Year Award more than once.
