After staying for so long at home and then suddenly, the timetable is out and exams starts, you might panic because you didn’t prepare well or you must have forgotten some things you learned. But you do not need to panic as it is never too late to put in the extra work to have your A’s and B’s in your WAEC.
The following tips could help you pass with flying colours
FORM YOUR PERSONAL TIMETABLE
One of the first things you are to do if you really want to pass your exams is to form a personal timetable. You could form it in line with the WAEC timetable or to go with your schedule. Make subjects you are going to take which you are not very good at a priority and also prioritize topics you are yet to cover. Don’t make the mistake of avoiding some subjects just because you are not good in them or some topics just because they are difficult. The way out of any challenging subject or topic is to face it. Make sure you adhere to your timetable strictly.
USE RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS
Do not waste your time studying from outdated textbooks so that your efforts will not be in vain. You can only refer to some information there. Always use recommended textbooks. If you do not have it, you can visit the library or borrow from course mates or even your teachers. After borrowing, you could form a note from whatever you are reading so as to have what to read when you return the textbooks.
HAVE A GREAT STUDY HABITS
Do not wait until a day before the exams before trying to cram everything. Your brain will not be able to take everything. Make studying your habit. Put away all distractions when it is your study time. Also, when studying for about 40 minutes, try to take a break of 10 minutes in between study time to refresh your brain.
STUDY WITH FRIENDS
You can study alone at first and later study with friends or serious study mates. This is to enable you understand some topics you are finding difficulty in. The advantage of group studying is after studying together, the members can explain to themselves and correction made where possible. If you are finding difficulty in Math or Physics, there might be a member of the group who is very good in the subject and can explain it to you. You can also explain any subjects you are good at to your study mates.
DO NOT STUDY FOR TOO LONG WITHOUT TAKING A BREAK
As you are studying, do not forget to take a break. It will give your brain a rest and help you to focus afterwards. When taking a break, step away from your study area, you could listen to music or take a walk.
DO NOT GET TIRED OF REVISING
No matter how much you have revised, don’t ever get tired of it. Re-read your notes, practice past questions from the exams and increase your proficiency in each subject. You can ask the help of a teacher or your classmates who knows more than you do on a particular subject where you are having some difficulties. Don’t stop practicing and testing yourself.
GET SOME SLEEP
It is never advisable to read or stay all through the night before an exam. In fact, it is said that sleep is another way of refreshing your memory. As a student, you need to have at least 8 hours of sleep. If not, getting to the exams hall after staying awake cramming, you might realize you can’t remember anything you must have crammed just because you have over stressed your brain.
BE POSITIVE ABOUT THE EXAMS
If you are already discouraged about the exams, there is no way you can pass, that is why it is always advisable to study early and stay positive. Do not dwell on failure, rather think success and have a positive attitude. Be confident that you will pass especially when you have taken time to study.
DO NOT GO TO THE EXAMS HALL ON EMPTY STOMACH
Breakfast keeps you going. Do not go to take exams without taking breakfast maybe due to anxiety. Eat a healthy breakfast no matter how small. But do not eat what will upset your stomach and make you uncomfortable. Eat a healthy and light breakfast before going to take your exams.
GET TO EXAMS HALL EARLY AND PREPARED
One of the beginnings of failure in exams is going to the exams hall late. When you are late, it leads to panic and you might forget things or make mistakes in the process. Go to the exams hall early and with an extra of everything needed for the exams. Put everything in order even before the day for the exams.
